Pond’s first resident – Spotted Marsh Frog

by cjj on March 28, 2011

Pond's first resident.

The pond's first resident.

We were putting some plants into the pond today, and this little frog came out from under a rock, and swam all around. Besides a drowned mouse, and plenty of insects, this is the first real resident to move in. We were pleasantly surprised to see more birds today than usual, and they were focusing on the pond. A scissors grinder was there (haven’t seen one of them for a few years). A wagtail spent ages catching insects over the water, flying from rock to rock around the edge of the pond. There was also a flame tale finch.

The frogs around here are nearly always green, or brown about to turn green. I have no idea what type of frog this one is.
