Quipolly Dam & Bird Hide

by cjj on April 26, 2011

Yesterday afternoon we went with some cousins on a drive to Qurindi. It was a very interesting drive but the highlight was Quipolly Dam. I had never been there before and was totally surprised by what I saw. It was truely beautiful. The deep blue sky and setting sun added to the visual appeal. There was even a bird hide on the edge of the lake and this made it very easy to enjoy the view.
Tonight I looked up this dam and found out it was built in 1932 and silted up so severely that it was abandoned in 1955. Another Quipolly dam was built just below it, and this original dam’s only purpose now is to protect the lower dam from being silted up. I liked the reeds that are growing in it. We never see this in Australian dams, probably because their levels are always changing. This dam would be shallow, but it is never emptied, so a perfect lake for birds.
