slow internet speeds are not fare!!!!

by cjj on July 21, 2010

I pay $au79 per month for my internet connection and it is so slow I wish I could through it away. It’s wireless but the tower is exactly 2.5km away and is in sight, and yet I get a weak signal according to Telstra’s own equipment. I did a speed test and this image shows the results.

Even in this small image you can see the small blue bar on the left compared to the average in the white bar immediately below it. Telstra are such a rip-off. They know that we have no choice of service, so they don’t have to provide any.

Something that is so frustrating is that Telstra buried a fibre network around the country years ago, it goes right past our front gate, and most people’s front gate, but we have no access to it.

Hello: I take it that your not on a power grid and telephone so you could get a dial-up connection ?

Hi Gary,
I would have thought that wireless was way faster than dial-up?? Do you think dial-up would be better? I have a paired telephone line which means it is shared with all my (distant) neighbours.

Hi,it’s Gary:

Wireless has a problem in that some ares have poor reception like with cell phones; you said the tower is a few kilometers away. Have you taken the laptop and driven as close to the tower to see if it works any better? If it does, it’s poor reception at your place, if not, then it could be something wrong
with the laptop or you could have picked up a virus like spyware.

I was surprized to hear that you have a shared telephone line; we used to call it a “party line”, my mother hated it back in the 1950’s, everyone listened in to your calls. Gary

Hi Gary,
Not exactly a shared line, but it is called pair gaining. I think a party line was where they had the same phone number and a different ring pattern for each customer. The old fashioned copper telephone lines technically called POTS (aka Plain Old Telephone Service) is capable of incredible speeds of data transmission. What slows it up is not only the equipment attached at each end (home and exchange) but in my case it is also the fact that many users are using the same piece of copper (which wasn’t supposed to happen). I have had dial up, ISDN and satellite. All of them way worse than wireless. Unless I was incredibly clever and could tap into the glass fibre at my front gate, I am stuck with wireless. I can’t get up close to the tower, it’s on private land. I have a few computers, and they are all virus free. If there was another wireless provider, ie competition, things might be different!!!

Hi:

Sounds like your stuck with that wireless company; at 79.00 aussie dollars, how much is that in U.S. dollars? Did you say you have a twin sister? I have twin neices and I still get them mixed up all the time; their in dental school at university. Where exactly do you live in the outback ? Saw a documentary on Australia and it said the Brits dumped convicts into Australia: do you know which ancestor pinched the loaf of bread and got shipped off? Just kidding…. If you guys ever need something from the U.S. let me know and I will send it to you. I think this website is fairly new, so it will take time for more people to find it and start communicating. Gary

Hi Gary,
that’s about 70 US dollars. It is way more than other companies in Australia charge, but they are the ‘national carrier’, used to be gov owned, and are still the only company that supply services to many poorly populated regional areas.
Very funny about the ancestors, but I think we do have ‘crime’ in the blood! That dumping of convicts was only 200 years ago. Most people are pretty proud if they have convict ancestors.
And yep, I do have a twin sister. Unfortunately we’re not look alikes. That would have been real fun!!! Shirley is a real cool artist, but just now helping out fabulous photographer hubby who’s had a stroke!! To quote my twin .. “damn”. Oh, I had better put his web site in my links list … check it out!!!

Hi:
Just had to tell everyone about this one; I heard a yell from my elderly neighbor and ran over to check out the situation. The flooring under the toilet had given way from water seepage and the old lady was sitting on the toilet and rode it all they way through the floor. Except for some scrapes and scratches she seemed OK; spent most of the day putting in a new bathroom floor for her. By the way; I’m a retired Anthropology/Archaeology professor here in Arizona. I have a hobby farm outside town with a burro named Poncho Villa and a goat named Silly Billy; I have it rigged with solar power; works great here in the desert. I live in Kingman Arizona which is about 90 miles South of Las Vegas, Nevada. An old man in Phoenix ran across the asphalt road barefoot and wound up with 3rd degree burns; it can get up to 126F here at times. Gary
