My Chinese lesson using Skype

notes modified after my Chinese lesson

Messages from my teacher on Skype, with notes from my revision after the lesson.

Each week I have a one hour Chinese lesson with my teacher who lives in Xi’an. Her name is XuNi.
She is an excellent teacher. The lessons are fun and she is meticulous. After going over some work she asks 你有问题吗?I usually reply I have no questions, and she proceeds to ask me questions. And lo and behold there is often stuff that I didn’t know that I didn’t know! I thought I understood it all, but there were things that I hadn’t grasped. I really appreciate this.
What I find very challenging is when XuNi asks me to tell her what a reading passage is about. Not read it, but re-word it and just talk! But that is what I want to be able to do, and I am so lucky to have someone helping me to do it.
We use Skype for the lessons. It’s great to able to see each other. XuNi writes messages to me as we go, and I record the audio of the lesson. Later on I can listen to it again, and I print out the messages too, so I follow them as I listen. I want to remember as much of each lesson as I can. The time in the lesson is too valuable to use it going over the same thing too often. Each week, I try to use what I learnt the previous week. I want XuNi to realise that what she tells me really isn’t being wasted!

Would love to hear about how you found your teacher and how you get on with the lessons.

I studied Chinese as an external student through UNE (University of New England, Armidale, NSW Australia). They liaise with a university in Xi’an, and send groups of students there to study every year. I did a 5 week course in 2009/10. I didn’t meet XuNi then, but a classmate who stayed on for 6 months study met her. So later on my classmate introduced me during a group Skype session.
I was very nervous to start, but I booked my lessons, and have always felt very lucky to have found the best teacher first off. I started with 3 lessons a week, but sadly my life has got in the way, and I now have one lesson a week. My homework is usually to write a story about something I’ve been doing. During the lesson I read it to XuNi who tries hard to understand what I am saying, laughs a lot!!! and corrects me as I go. We also just talk a lot. She helps me make sentences as we go, so it is instant feedback. Her English is very good, so it is easy to speak in English too. (My classmate never speaks English in her lessons! I wish I was that good with my Chinese)
XuNi is a private teacher. She finds her students from among the waiguorens who visit Xi’an to study. I think she is always happy to take on more students.
I know that her web site doesn’t work any more, but I will fix her contact details on this web site.
